Future Freight Networks : Yearbook 2014
71 fUTUre freiGHT neTWorKS 2014 Company profile X COMPANY PROFILE When Cassie Morton graduated from Griffith University with a degree in international business, her career in enterprise procurement was already on track. Cassie, who majored in logistics and supply chain management, says the study structure at Griffith Business School included industry networking and work placement opportunities that connected her with QR National where she secured full-time employment. A Griffith University graduate certificate in this area subsequently allowed Cassie’s formal qualifications to expand and enabled practical application as her career developed. Now a sourcing specialist with Australia’s largest rail freight operator Aurizon (following the rebranding of QR National), Cassie is a member of the project procurement team. She undertakes regular market and supplier analysis, strategy planning, market engagement, negotiation and contract management with a high emphasis on relationship building. She places a high value on logistics, specification and scope clarity as well as supply chain management. ‘International suppliers are now an important part of the business,’ she says. ‘This brings with it new considerations, like balancing value for money with potential risks associated with an international market. Strategic decision- making is increasingly crucial.’ Cassie says her lecturers at Griffith were influential and insightful when they explained the job was about ‘developing relationships, problem-solving and delivering tangible results for a business’. She plans to return to Griffith University to study a Master of Supply Network Management, which, like the Graduate Certificate in Supply Network Management, can now be studied online, on-campus or through a combination of the two.
