58 Company profile X COMPANY PROFILE On 31 May 2013, NSW Ports finalised the 99-year lease with the New South Wales Government for Port Botany and Port Kembla. NSW Ports will be focused on sustainable growth and is committed to managing and developing the ports in a safe, secure, efficient and environmentally responsible manner. Port Botany is New South Wales’s primary container port and Australia’s second-largest container port by volume. In 2012/13, Port Botany handled 2.126 million TEUs, a growth of 4.4 per cent on the previous year. Port Botany also has Australia’s largest common user bulk liquids facility (for chemicals, refined fuels and LPG). Botany handles 90 per cent of the state’s LPG demand. 1.7 million TEUs, or 85.8 per cent of the total volume, is carried in/out by road and the current rail mode share is just over 14.2 per cent, at 278,005 TEUs. The New South Wales Government has a goal to double rail mode share, which NSW Ports fully supports and is focused on delivering. Sydney International Container Terminal Limited facility (third Terminal) commenced operations in November 2013. Port Botany now has more container quay cranes and related equipment than any other port in Australia and over 236 hectares of land dedicated to container operations. Port Botany has the largest container-handling facilities in Australia. The $1 billion port expansion enables Port Botany to handle the estimated growth for Australia’s largest economy. The second bulk liquids berth will also ensure that the increasing fuel, LPG and liquid chemicals demand in New South Wales continues to be met. The Intermodal Logistics Centre (ILC) at Enfield, at 60 hectares, will deliver an improved way to distribute containers through Sydney. With over 85 per cent of Sydney’s containers heading west, the ILC, with its dual rail sidings of more than 900 metres, eight hectares of empty container storage and over 100,000 square metres of warehousing, is best placed to service this growing demand. From the ILC all major rail connections can also be met, with the opportunity to also run interstate trains. Port Kembla handles more than 300,000 vehicles each year. Last year, the Port handled over 20 million tonnes of coal, grain and other general bulk freight. With over 138 hectares of terminal land, 12 berths (a quay line of 3000 metres) and 14 kilometres of rail network, Port Kembla is well placed to handle the anticipated growth. Plans are in place, though, for a further 85 hectares of land, when and if needs arise. NSW Ports’ operations are well equipped to take on the challenge of ensuring that New South Wales’s freight supply chain copes and assists to deliver continued growth and prosperity for the residents and businesses of New South Wales.
