44 A NATIONAL AppROACH TO pORTS AND SHIppING Session 3 ALC 2011 Annual Dinner Paddy Crumlin National Secretary, Maritime Union of Australia, and President, International Transport Workers Federation Crumlin provided yet another perspective on Australian seaports, and defended the history of achievement within the Australian industry. He was emphatic about the importance of having a strong national merchant marine, and argued the case for strong coastal shipping capability with safety as a key imperative. Crumlin stated that a national perspective was crucial, and that he considered that much could be achieved without the need for political extremism. Don Figliomeni CEO, Port Kembla Port Corporation As a regional port just south of Syd- ney, Port Kembla has an important future as Port Botany gets busier. Some $170 million has recently been spent there on upgrades, and the port is waiting on ministerial approval to go ahead with another $700 million. Figliomeni provided another example of the lack of coordination between transport modes. When it came to trying to develop integrated plans for expansion of the port, no one could tell him what the capacity of the local rail system was – he had little option but to turn to the CSIRO and Wollongong University for simulation models. Figliomeni also noted that community concerns could exert significant pressures on such projects, as could government departments. Steve Bradford CEO, Port of Melbourne Corporation Australia’s largest container port has just released a landmark study into container movements through the port. The Origin Destination Study provides detailed insights into where containers come from, where they go, how long they stay in certain locations, what happens to the empties, and much more. Bradford noted that this is the first time such detailed and vital information has been available, and that it will provide valuable input into future planning for all of Victoria’s ports. Greg Martin Regional Director, Wallenius Willhelmsen Logistics While welcoming the National Ports Strategy and reform of Australia’s shipping industry generally, Martin stressed the need, based on his extensive experience, to be pragmatic. The National Ports Strategy will help to get ports on the national agenda, but actual implementation would be dependent upon federal funding, despite the fact that the ports are creatures of the state governments. Martin was supportive of a larger Australian merchant marine fleet, but once again many practical issues had to be worked out in a complex environment. The 2011 ALC Annual Dinner was held at the RACV Club on 21 February, during the ALC Annual Forum. The 300 attendees enjoyed a night of industry fellowship.
