Future Freight Networks : Yearbook 2011
14X Company profile GS1 Australia is working closely with many of the key transport associations, transport providers and the Government to assist the transport and logistics sector to adopt global standards to improve their supply chain processes. GS1 Australia is a neutral, not-for- profit organisation that registers and issues bar code numbers in Australia so duplication of numbers does not occur. It is a member of the global not-for-profit organisation GS1, which is driven by more than a million member companies around the world. The GS1 standards are a global way to uniquely identify assets including products, locations, logistics units and shipments for electronic commerce and eBusiness. Because the GS1 standards are global they can be used throughout the world, across borders and throughout the end-to-end supply chain. GS1 Australia is working with key organisations such as National ICT Australia (NICTA), Australia’s information and communications technology (ICT) Centre of Excellence, supply chain software company SAP and Europe’s biggest applied research outfit, Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering, and other Australian companies to drive change through standards and technology in the Australian transport and logistics sector. A key initiative for 2011 was the establishment of The Future Logistics Living Lab based in the Australian Technology Park in Sydney. The Living Lab will provide a physical platform for industry and research to work together, to investigate and overcome real-world logistics issues, and to demonstrate and test innovative technology that will provide transport and logistics solutions for the future. GS1 Australia aims to provide value to Australian supply chains by delivering relevant global standards, trusted data and additional services that enable transport and logistics businesses to be more efficient and effective at meeting their customers’ needs.
