104 COMPANY PROFILE X Barangaroo is one of the most ambitious urban renewal projects in the world today, embodying world-class design excellence and sustainability. The 22-hectare precinct, worth more than $6 billion, has redefined the western edge of Sydney Harbour, and is a genuine mixed-use precinct with residential, commercial and retail facilities. The entire Barangaroo development is serviced by a single driveway from Sydney’s Hickson Road that leads to more than 90 underground loading docks. These loading docks all have different capabilities and are shared between the Barangaroo communities. Any authorised party wanting access to the delivery docks is required to make a booking with MobileDOCK, an online appointment scheduling and management application. Each appointment takes into account the requested time, type of vehicle, type and quantity of the delivery, dock availability and the site’s operations policies, and provides a timed ‘boarding pass’ to enable access to a compatible dock. MobileDOCK has been integral to: • managing the construction stage to dynamically direct arrivals to ‘virtual docks’ created at street level when operational issues prevented use of the underground loading docks • enabling fast turnaround times for carriers, balanced freight volumes for the dock team, ambience for the precinct and access for tenants • providing direct notifications to carriers on any unscheduled closure of the docks preventing them from approaching the site • providing drivers with specific times and guaranteed access for deliveries. This prevents congestion on busy city streets while drivers look for loading zones, saving the delivery firms and their customers time and money • minimising queuing times to access the site, and reducing fuel costs and greenhouse gas emissions. MobileDOCK’s Managing Director, David Sanders, says ‘Barangaroo has fully embraced the MobileDOCK Smart City initiative, and demonstrates how benefits of physical investments, such as new loading docks, can be fully realised through the use of smart technology’. Shane Mulcahy, Engineering Services Manager, International Towers Sydney, adds that ‘Recently, traffic access around Barangaroo was significantly reduced due to a compromised sewer line, which impacted all incoming deliveries. Barangaroo was able to relocate the loading docks to street level, with MobileDOCK used to filter and continue our dock operations as usual. It worked an absolute treat’.
