138 FORUM 2016 Outcomes from the 2015 Diversity Summit Alexandra Badenoch, Director of Human Resources, Corporate Affairs & Customer at Asciano, and Chair of ALC People Committee, provided an overview of the outcomes from the 2015 Diversity Summit, including what ALC and the logistics industry can do to attract, retain and support talented women in the logistics workforce. She began by citing a number of figures that demonstrate the significance of the task. Badenoch said that research showed that there are approximately four times more male managers than female managers throughout the industry, and that women make up less than 15 per cent of directors on transport company Boards. In the wider transport workforce, women make up only one in five employees. And, despite a 28 per cent growth in employment within the industry over the last 10 years, the number of women in the industry increased by only one per cent. At the Summit, ALC mapped a series of actions that it will progress to encourage more women into the industry, to widen the recruitment pool, and to help bring a new perspective to the industry. Badenoch said the Summit represented the first step in ALC’s journey to address this issue, and that some progress has already been made. For example, ALC is progressing a diversity policy, including Board representation, pledges for representation on Forum panels, and a new approach on branding. ALC will also investigate scholarships, sponsorships and internships to promote greater diversity. Badenoch believes that promotion and marketing need to be priorities. We also need to tell people about employment opportunities and career paths, and how changes in technology can support new roles in the industry. Work needs to be done on measuring progress, and then celebrating it. For example, case studies can be developed to publicise positive success stories in the industry. Questions from the floor focused on the appeal of the logistics industry in the wider female workforce. Badenoch said it was a myth that women don’t want to work in this industry. As an industry, we need to do better to inform people about the career opportunities for women in our sector. Ultimately, diversity and inclusion need to be core business. ALC cannot do this alone, and needs the support of the whole industry to make it a reality. Alexandra Badenoch
