In the context of discussions regarding a more coordinated approach to the movement of freight in Sydney, Kirsten Molloy, CEO of Hunter Valley Coal Chain Coordinator, explained the efficiency dividend from having improved collaboration between all parties in the movement of coal in the Hunter. The HVCCC is uniquely placed to have a complete ‘helicopter’ view of the entire Hunter Valley Coal Chain, and has been integral to the efficient movement and loading of more than 1400 coal vessels per year from the coal terminals through the Port of Newcastle. Maurice James, Managing Director of Qube, said the thinking shift on intermodal has been due to the federal government getting on board with Moorebank. Once that became a reality, others saw value in intermodal. The state government also came on board. Compare that, James said, with what is not happening in Victoria; Victoria was once the freight capital of Australia, but it is losing that title to New South Wales. In response to a discussion on the role of the Port Botany Rail Optimisation Group, James said 36 containers per hour on trains in Port Botany is a low benchmark, and that there is no need for government intervention because there is enough incentive to improve this level.
